What is a Film opening?

A film opening, also known as an opening sequence, is the initial scene or sequence of a film that sets the tone, establishes the setting, and introduces the audience to the story. Different technique used to hook the audience and establish the story :

1. Establishing Shot :

Used to set the scene and introduce the audience to the film's world, location, and time period.

2. Opening Credits :

Typically includes the title of the film, main cast, crew, and production company.

3. Narrative Hook :

Grabs the audience's attention and encourages then to watch the rest of the movie. This can be done by using techniques like red herrings, flash backs or introducing the plot catalyst.

4. Tone and Atmosphere :

Introduces the film's mood and genre using mise en scene that r common in that genre. This can be done conventionally by following the genre or unconventionally by Flipping the genre.

5. Character Introduction :

Introducing the protagonist or the villain and their purpose in the beginning is another way to make a good opening scene. This can also be done by establishing the relationships between characters.

6. Story Setup :

Provides context, exposition, or background information necessary to understand the story. This can be done using flash forwards or flash backs.

7. Thematic Introduction :

It hints at the film's themes, ideas, or messages that will be explored throughout the narrative. In Film openings Dreams are often used to introduce the desires of protagonist or villains.

To research film openings I used my class notes, and watched the video linked here.
