Reviewing the opening scene of IT

I decided to review the opening scene of the movie "IT" (2017) directed by Andy Muschietti and is of horror genre. The scene starts with the character Georgie running out of the house. Cutting to Georgie warmly waving at his brother. This can be a foreshadowing to what's to come later in the opening scene. Then a close up of Georgie's boat is shown as he pushes it. These shot really highlighted his innocence and child like habits. Georgie's yellow coat signifies his optimism and bright personality.

Two consecutive wide shots were filmed to establish the location and the stormy weather. As Georgie chases the boat a bird eye shot was used to show his urgency. A mid shot was used to show him as he tackles a hurdle which is seamlessly edited into a POV shot as he hits his head and falls. This causes the boat to slip away into a drain and we get introduced to our antagonist.

The location chosen for Pennywise was impressive as it added to the sinister tone. The bottom lighting highlighting his eerie features, particularly his unsettling eyes. It was followed by a tense conversation between the two. The scene juxtaposes to an over the shoulder shot of an old lady observing Georgie. The carnival sound effects added to the scene where Pennywise is temping Georgie really emphasized the eerie feeling. The next sequence had minimalist shots of Georgie and pennywise as they exchanged their dialogue. This added great value to the narrative however, there could have been more improvements in these shots.

The scene abruptly falls silent to add suspense and as Georgie reaches out to grab the boat eerie music starts playing and climaxes when Penny wise attacks Georgie. The Opening Scene ends with a death which is a common theme in most horror movies. The color grading of the scene is predominantly dark except Georgie's bright yellow coast. It really highlighted his childish innocence. Making the tragic ending even more disturbing.
